SASOL’S LAKE CHARLES PROJECT FACES MORE DELAYS - 2019/02/14

According to a press release, Sasol’s LLDPE unit has become the first of its seven new production facilities to come online within the scope of the Lake Charles Chemicals Project (LCCP). The unit started up in January and has recently achieved on-spec output.

Located in Louisiana, the US, the 470,000 tons/year unit was originally planned to come online before the end of December last year.

Regarding its new cracker and LDPE unit, the company announced earlier last week that the start of beneficial operations was delayed due to major cost overruns stemming from several factors.

Accordingly, the 420,000 tons/year LDPE plant is scheduled to come online in July and the start-up of the 1.5 million tons/year cracker is slated for August this year. The remaining LCCP units are expected to reach beneficial operations throughout 2019 and early 2020.

TOTAL MAKES SIGNIFICANT GAS FIND OFF MOSSEL BAY - 2019/02/11

Total has made a significant gas condensate discovery on the Brulpadda prospects in the Outeniqua Basin, 175 kms off the southern coast of South Africa.
The Brulpadda well encountered 57 m of net gas condensate pay in lower cretaceous reservoirs. The well was then deepened to 3,633 m.

“We are very pleased to announce the Brulpadda discovery which was drilled in a challenging deep-water environment”, said Kevin McLachlan, senior vice president exploration at Total. “With this discovery, Total has opened a new world-class gas and oil play and is well positioned to test several follow-on prospects on the same block.”

This exploration well was drilled with the latest generation drilling ship and was able to leverage its experience in similar environments, such as the west of Shetland, UK. Following the success of Brulpadda and confirmation of the play potential, Total and its partners plan to acquire 3D seismic this year, followed by up to four exploration wells on this license.

The Block 11B/12B covers an area of 19,000 km2, with water depths ranging from 200-1,800 m, and is operated by Total with a 45% working interest, alongside Qatar Petroleum (25%), CNR international (20%) and Main Street, a South African consortium (10%).
